Our ZHAW Coffee Box set is special for many reasons. The coffees are from two of the most prominent coffee farms in the world.
Hacienda La Esmeralda, Chiriqui, Panamá and Finca La Negrita, Tolima, Colombia have been used to win multiple national and International championships. Both are known for meticulous growing, selection, and processing standards. Both Mauricio Shattah (La Negrita) and Alexandra Engfer Peterson (Esmeralda) just completed the 15 month intensive Zurich University post-grad Advanced Studies in Coffee Science certificate alongside our co-owner, Leon. It was an incredible 15 months at ZHAW Coffee Excellence Center studying seed to cup science and connnecting and collaborating with a group of coffee professionals from 21 countries.
This box set is meant to mark that joint cross-border curiosity and dedication to life long learning and these special relationships we have formed from it. The Hacienda La Esmeralda selection is a washed Gesha Especial Noria 3 lot, from the farm that started it all: Jaramillo. The Mauricio Shattah selection is his award-winning Typica Mejorado Competition lot, anaerobic fermentation, nitrogen flushed.
These specific lots came from lab and farm visits in the last several months. We hope you'll enjoy them along with us and mark this special moment in the completion of our participation in the ZHAW CAS Coffee Excellence program.
Hacienda La Esmeralda is the farm that blew Gesha as a variety into the stratosphere starting in 2004 when they set the world record highest price for coffee at auction. In 2013 their coffee was used by our friend James McCarthy to win the world's brewer's cup. In 2017 their natural processed Gesha set another record...
Mauricio Shattah, an MD, approaches his coffee with the standards of a scientist. Everything is done meticulously from farm practices to picking at the peak of ripeness, to optical and hand sorting. He experiments to bring out the very best of the terroir and flavor. His coffee has been used by many national competitors to win competitions year after year.
In this set you will get two jars of 100 grams of both of these beautiful coffees.
