We’ve purchased a few coffees from JNP Coffee founder Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian because the quality is always superior.
In addition to her quality prerogatives, Jeanine also focuses specifically on increasing gender diversity within the Burundian coffee community. Jeanine is also the only woman majority shareholder of a larger Burundi coffee conglomerate and a role model not just in Burundi but also in the coffee community.
JNP works with organizations that focus on gender diversity and inclusivity in the region, such as the International Women’s Coffee Alliance Burundi Chapter. They also founded the nonprofit Burundi Friends International to educate youth, improve financial literacy, and create self-sustaining communities.
As for Ntwari II: Meet the woman behind this coffee. While her name will remain private to honor her wishes, her courage, leadership and vision deserve to be celebrated.
It takes courage to enter the coffee business as a widow. In Kirundi, ntwari speaks to both courage and leadership—qualities embodied by the woman whose coffee carries this name.
Several years after her husband’s passing, she continued building her place in an industry largely led by men. She found her voice as a farmer, businesswoman, and leader, determined to grow a coffee business of her own.
Along the way, she connected with Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian and other women through JNP Coffee, joining a community of farmers who were learning, experimenting, and strengthening their approaches to specialty coffee. The knowledge and relationships she gained became part of her journey, adding to the work and determination she was already bringing to her farm and business.
Today, she is not only growing coffee—she is creating opportunities for other women. As her business grows, she is bringing young women alongside her, sharing what she has learned and helping create a path for those who will follow.
Ntwari coffee is grown in Muyinga, now part of Buhumuza Province, and processed at a women-owned wet mill.
This coffee honors her courage, her leadership, and the journey she continues to shape on her own terms.
