More:

The smallholder producers behind Kinmuga coffees are located in the southern reaches of the Waghi Valley, along the border of the Anglimp and Kindeng districts in Papua New Guinea. Known as the "food bowl" of PNG for thousands of years, the Waghi Valley is surrounded by ancient volcanic landscapes that have created exceptionally fertile sandy loam soils. The coffee gardens are situated near the Wara Tuman River, which carries nutrient-rich waters from some of the country's highest volcanic peaks, further enriching the growing environment.

Coffee cherries are delivered to the Kindeng wet mill, where they are carefully pulped, fermented, and dried to parchment before being transported to the Kagamuga dry mill in Mount Hagen for final preparation and export. Since 2018, the Kindeng wet mill has operated a wastewater digester, helping reduce environmental impact during processing and supporting more sustainable coffee production practices.

Little Waves has sourced coffees from Papua New Guinea through Benchmark Coffee Traders since 2021, when we first met founder Vikram Punathambekar at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston. From the beginning, Vikram's work has aligned closely with our sourcing values of Quality, Relationship, and Impact. In addition to connecting roasters with exceptional coffees, Benchmark invests directly in producer communities through locally driven social initiatives.

One such initiative was carried out in partnership with QueenPads PNG, a women-owned social enterprise that manufactures reusable menstrual hygiene products and provides menstrual health education throughout Papua New Guinea. Together, they funded and distributed reusable hygiene products to 580 women involved in the production of several of their coffees while conducting educational workshops throughout the Highlands. In a country where menstrual health remains highly stigmatized and access to adequate products is often limited, programs like these can have a meaningful impact on health, education, and quality of life.

This commitment continues in 2026 with a multi-region vision clinic serving coffee-producing communities in Mount Hagen, Goroka, and Port Moresby. The project brings together healthcare professionals from Papua New Guinea and the United States, including the Deputy Chief Ophthalmologist for the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority, with support from organizations such as University of Illinois Chicago, The Fred Hollows Foundation, and VOSH. Papua New Guinea experiences one of the world's highest rates of preventable blindness, making access to eye care an urgent need for many rural communities.

When you purchase this coffee, you're supporting more than a remarkable cup. You're helping sustain partnerships that invest in producer well-being, strengthen farming communities, and create lasting impact at origin. Every cup connects quality, relationship, and impact.
