It is a great honor to source coffees from a new-to-us origin this year: Myanmar. Part of my job as a green coffee buyer is to keep my eyes peeled for new and exciting opportunities to engage in forging relationships that we can build upon over time. I love having the ability to try different processing methods from unexpected countries or specialty coffee from origins that are new to me. In creating our coffee offerings throughout the year, we strive to bring together quality, sustainability, and impact. It's also about creating a unique and varied series of tasting experiences for our customers and our team.
There is so much coffee out in the world that is waiting for us to taste it and we are excited to share our seasonal menu with you all. Bringing this coffee in from Myanmar is such a treat for our palates and expanding our reach in creating relationships. We crossed paths with Pink Headed Duck Coffee at the SCA Coffee Expo in Boston in 2019. Fast forward to 2022 and we started having conversations about the 2023 crop and now we are excited to share it with you.
This coffee is from Danu people located in the Pway Na Phar Village. Their coffees have been awarded best natural process coffees in Myanmar’s first-ever cupping competition in 2015, and once again in 2017, the producers here continue to deliver a consistently delicious natural.
We are getting so much sweetness from this coffee and notes of raspberries, orange zest, and rooibos. We like to say that this coffee is perfect for tea lovers. We cannot stop drinking it. It's so unique.
More: This village is named after the range of stony hills rising above the village in multiple directions. Pway translates to “stony hill” and Na Phar means a continuous row.
Daw Phyu Pu and Daw Mya Hnin, the two women farmers to win Myanmar’s first cupping competition, continue to be leaders in their community and are the reason coffee from this village is produced year after year to the highest standard. As you may know by now, we love to uplift, support, and shine a light on women doing amazing work to bring their communities ahead.
