Muungano means “togetherness” in Swahili, and true to its name the cooperative brings farmers together from many different ethnicities, including people of Bahunde, Bahavu, Bashi, Batembo, and Congolese descent. Coming together to work on a common business, long-held ethnic tensions were progressively overcome.

Muungano consists of 4,238 coffee farmers, of which 1,729 are women. The inequalities faced by women are even more extreme than in many other coffee-growing regions of the world, and the need for change is critical. Muungano has been working with the GALS methodology since 2014, working with over 350 women and men. The GALS (Gender Action Learning System) is a community-led empowerment methodology that uses principles of inclusion to improve income, food, and nutrition security of vulnerable people in a gender-equitable way. The aim is for all to work together to consider the power imbalances and create social change from a place of understanding, avoiding the kind of conflict that can arise from shifting gender dynamics and power.
