We’ve purchased a few coffees from JNP Coffee founder Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian because the quality is always superior.

In addition to her quality prerogatives, Jeanine also focuses specifically on increasing gender diversity within the Burundian coffee community. Jeanine is also the only woman majority shareholder of a larger Burundi coffee conglomerate and a role model not just in Burundi but also in the coffee community.

JNP works with organizations that focus on gender diversity and inclusivity in the region, such as the International Women’s Coffee Alliance Burundi Chapter. They also founded the nonprofit Burundi Friends International to educate youth, improve financial literacy, and create self-sustaining communities.

As for Bavyeyi, we loved this coffee right off the bat. It’s also close to Jeanine’s heart because this is where her mother grew up. Stories of her mother helping the family harvest coffee cherries to cover school fees stand behind the name for this coffee: in Burundi, “bavyeyi” means “parents”.

The Ngozi province features high altitudes perfect for growing coffee (at about 1,800 meters above sea level [or MASL]). JNP works with an experienced woman-owned cooperative with more than 600 members, many of them Muslim women. This year's Bavyeyi lot is a community-sourced lot consisting of women and men and still delivers an array of beautiful flavors we got from the women's cooperative last year.

Bavyeyi is the first naturally processed coffee we’ve purchased from Burundi and we're happy to see it back. We love it for its uniquely delicate profile, unusual for a natural, and its kaleidoscope of flavors.
